Team Europe dominated on the first day, closing Friday unbeaten. The team led by Luke Donald secured 4 out of 4 in the morning foursomes – a feat unprecedented in Ryder Cup history.
Saturday saw Europe closing the 2nd day of the Ryder Cup ahead by five points against the United States; the Old Continent led 10 ½ – 5 ½.
The 12 singles matches scheduled for Sunday proved decisive: Europe needed four victories to bring home the cup.
Sunday witnessed the great triumph of Europe: the Ryder Cup returned to Europe thanks to the victory against the United States by 16 ½ to 11 ½. Tommy Fleetwood secured the crucial point in a challenging afternoon at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, where despite Europe entering the singles matches with a commanding lead and never being in real danger, the United States threatened to complete a historic comeback.
GO EUROPE!

STATEMENTS FROM THE CAPTAINS

Luke Donald, Captain of Team Europe: “The United States fought hard, but I am proud of my 12 guys who formed a strong bond from day one and gave it their all. They needed to play well, and they did. I’m happy they trusted me. Not many gave us a chance after Whistling Straits. We weren’t the favorites, but in the last six months, we started to show some form. I thank everyone, support staff, physiotherapists, coaches, wives: it was a team effort. My vice captains have participated in 30 Ryder Cups between them and played in 24. We know what it means to win. We know how to win.”

Zach Johnson, Captain of Team USA: “It’s a moment where you have to accept that the European team played really great golf, and the clearest reflection I can offer is that Luke’s team played fantastically. I would love to start the week over again, but unfortunately, that’s not possible. The home fans were important for the European triumph. There was energy, like fuel for the engine, if you will.”

STATEMENTS FROM THE PLAYERS

Edoardo Molinari: “It was a perfect 10 Ryder Cup. I was impressed by the organization, the crowd, the perfect setting of Rome. United Europe won, playing as a team. It’s the victory of the group, led by an incredible captain, of whom I am very proud.”

Francesco Molinari: “It’s the first time I’ve cried on a golf course; I’m so happy.
This is one of the best, if not the best, teams I’ve ever seen. We didn’t experience moments of difficulty, and at times, we dominated. I tried to contribute morally. I would obviously like to play another two, three, four Ryder Cups, but it will depend on many factors.
‘If I will be the captain of Team Europe in the future?’ I don’t know if that will happen; if it does, I certainly wouldn’t shy away.”

Shane Lowry: “It’s a dream come true for me and something I’ve always wanted to achieve in my career. It’s been the best week of my life, although, to be honest, the last four hours were stressful. This morning, Fleetwood, MacIntyre, and I joked, saying, ‘let’s hope it doesn’t come down to us.’ But it did, and Tommy did the job. The rest was just a celebration.”

Tommy Fleetwood: “I’m proud to be part of this group. We have an extraordinary bunch of people. We’re one giant family, and the bonds we’ve created among ourselves will last a lifetime. Luke? He was superb. We all look at him on a different level for what he’s done. The fans? They were the absolute best, giving their all every single day and carrying us on their shoulders.”
